FUNDAMENTAL SURGERY PREVIEWS OPHTHALMOLOGY SIMULATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ORBIS
Fundamental Surgery™ is an accredited education and simulation platform that takes advantage of readily available virtual reality software combined with cutting edge haptics (the sense of touch) to create a simulation system that can be used on any suitable VR enabled PC. The result is a simulation system that requires a hardware investment starting from as little as $16,000 and a simple ongoing licence fee.
WHAT IS IT?
Orbis is previewing the world’s first-ever simulation training platform for ophthalmology that uses virtual reality, haptic feedback, cloud assessment data, and low-cost, off-the-shelf hardware. In partnership with the platform’s creator, FundamentalVR, Orbis developed the innovative tech solution that will enable us and our partners to train more surgeons in skills development, with immediate, standardized feedback, at a fraction of the cost of existing simulators. The platform will particularly benefit doctors in places where previous simulators were too big or expensive to be deployed, enhancing the quality of ophthalmology practice globally.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The platform has been designed to operate on a station consisting of hardware available globally, off the shelf, and starts at $16,000 to buy. This is in comparison to other simulators that can cost over $200,000 to acquire. Each station then subscribes to a license for each available procedure; the annual price of each procedure license will be published in 2020.
WHEN WILL IT BE AVAILABLE? The first procedure that will be available on the platform is M6, MSICS. Orbis is now previewing the most important and complex part of that procedure, the Capsulorhexis. The platform will be rolled out in 2020.
