The Power of AI in Medical Education

The convergence of Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping medical training. AI has the potential to revolutionize medical education by personalizing learning experiences, enhancing  engagement, and empowering educators with real-time insights and guidance. While challenges and considerations exist, the benefits of AI in education are undeniable.

Clinical training has advanced over the years, and now with the adoption of technology we are able to accelerate human capability via spatial immersive VR simulation and, as a result, advance pre-human competence in surgery and additional clinical environments to improve patient outcomes.

Generative AI offers the potential to take this even a step further. AI and advanced ML (machine learning) models can offer expert guidance throughout the VR experience, allowing for immediate intervention and correction. This proactive approach ensures safer training environments, ultimately leading to better training results.

An example of a tool that has been implemented in the Fundamental Surgery Immersive VR Platform is Maia – a tutor designed to support learners throughout their training journey.

Maia provides a two-way conversation with learners about the environment (e.g. Cath Lab, OR), Procedure-specific knowledge and can act as a teacher or a coach. 

Maia has advanced the learning experience by providing personalized verbal coaching,  reducing the dependence on written instructions, and increasing the level of immersion in VR training.
