UCLH ADOPTS FUNDAMENTAL SURGERY

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL ADVANCES SURGICAL SKILLS TRAINING WITH ADOPTION OF GROUNDBREAKING IMMERSIVE VR SIMULATOR FUNDAMENTAL SURGERY
Published November 22, 2018

LONDON  – November 27th, 2018

FundamentalVR, pioneers of immersive VR training technology announced today a pioneering partnership with University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). Two ground-breaking surgical simulators have been installed at UCLH’s flagship University College Hospital, one of the UK’s leading teaching hospitals, as well as the UCLH staff training centre.

UCLH are the first in Europe to have adopted the VR and Haptic simulation system for Spine and Orthopaedic training.

Commenting on the announcement, UCLH Director of Surgical Education Sam Oussedik said “Training in practical skills for medical students and junior doctors requires repetition of surgical steps. This need cannot be met by traditional cadaveric facilities, due to the costs involved and the scarcity of facilities. This gap in training can be met by technology that allows realistic and educationally solid simulation.”

Paul O’Flynn, Consultant ENT/ Head and Neck Surgeon at UCLH, added “Flight simulators are an integral part of the airline industry for training and maintaining skills. The surgical simulators at UCLH are state of the art. We welcome the partnership with FundamentalVR to further enhance and develop these resources that combine the benefits of immersive technology and haptic (sense of touch) feedback.”

Richard Vincent, CEO at FundamentalVR commented, “We are thrilled to be working with such a prestigious teaching hospital as UCLH. Our haptic + immersive VR platform has tremendous long-term potential for enhancing surgical training throughout the NHS, in the pursuit of better patient outcomes. Which underlines the significance of moving ahead with such an innovative hospital partner.”
